Löwenberg is a Mennonite family found principally in the [[Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)|Palatinate]] and in the [[United States of America|United States]]. The progenitor of the family was Johannes Löwenberg, born 1775, a weaver of Bolanden. He was originally Protestant, but married Elisabeth Hahn, a member of the Mennonite congregation at [[Weierhof (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)|Weierhof]], and joined the Mennonite Church there and also settled there. A son with the same name emigrated to the United States in 1850 with his family and a group of relatives and friends and settled in [[Donnellson (Iowa, USA)|Donnellson]], [[Iowa (USA)|Iowa]]. The present members of this family in the United States are his descendants. The progenitor of the branch remaining in [[Germany|Germany]] was [[Löwenberg, Michael (1821-1874)|Michael Löwenberg]] (1821-1874), a minister of the Weierhof congregation and the founder of the school at Weierhof

One of Michael's sons was Thomas Löwenberg, b. 26 February 1849, at the Weierhof, married first to Kathi then to Sophie Göbel, d. 23 March 1928. He received his pedagogical training in the normal school at Schiers, Switzerland, and his theological training in the mission school at Barmen, Germany. In 1873 he accepted the position of minister in the Weierhof-[[Uffhofen (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)|Uffhofen]] congregation and after his father's death for a time was the head of the Weierhof school. In 1882 he was called as minister of the Mennonite congregation at [[Ibersheim (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)|Ibersheim]]-Eppstein-[[Ludwigshafen (Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany)|Ludwigshafen]], and served them until 1917. He spent his period of retirement at the Weierhof. All the present members of this family in Germany are descendants of Thomas and his brother August. Some members of this family settled in Iowa, from where the name spread over other states.
