Alexander (Aleksandr) Klaus, a Russian of German extraction, published a book in 1889 in Russian with the title Nashi Kolonii (Our Colonies), which will always be important for the history of foreign colonies in Russia. To the [[Hutterian Brethren (Hutterische Brüder)|Hutterites]] and Mennonites he devoted 128 pages. In 1887 the Odessaer Zeitung published a German translation of the book, done by its editor, Jakob Toews, under the title Unsere Kolonien.

 As the centennial year of the Mennonite sojourn in Russia approached in 1889, Mennonites began to develop an appreciation of their history. This prompted the wealthy miller Jacob Toews to translate Klaus’ book into German as ''Unsere Kolonien: Studien und Materialien zur Geschichte und Statistik der ausländischen Kolonisation in Russland''. The translation omitted some chapters and appendices that were outdated by 1887.
