David S. Kaufman, was born 7 September 1834 near Davidsville, [[Pennsylvania (USA)|Pennsylvania]], son of Samuel Kaufman. He died 17 July 1918. He married Lydia Kaufman and moved to [[Lagrange County (Indiana, USA)|Lagrange County]], Indiana, some years later, where he was ordained to the ministry. In the spring of 1877 he was ordained bishop in the North Barrens district of the [[Old Order Amish|Old Order Amish]] Mennonite Church. Bishop Kaufman was very successful in leading his flock. Although he also had his troubles and sometimes a few adversaries, still he always succeeded in preserving peace in the church. His services and advice were much sought in other states. He was called and let himself be used in church work in more different places than any other bishop of his time. He was always very successful in working for peace and harmony wherever he was called. His field of service covered the entire country from [[Pennsylvania (USA)|Pennsylvania]] to [[Oregon (USA)|Oregon]] and from [[North Dakota (USA)|North Dakota]] to [[Mississippi (USA)|Mississippi]]. Although he was lenient toward other leaders who could not quite agree with his views, he was firm in his convictions and adhered strictly to what he thought was right where he himself had to take the lead.
