Hendrik van Heylbronn was born 4 February 1697 at Heilbronn, [[Germany|Germany]], died 4 December 1782 at [[Almelo (Overijssel, Netherlands)|Almelo]], Dutch province of [[Overijssel (Netherlands)|Overijssel]]; nothing is known about his youth. His official name was Johann Heinrich Gramm von Heilbronn. In the spring of 1729 he came from [[Goch (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)|Goch]], where he was baptized on his faith, to Almelo, where he married Geessien Warnaars in 1729, and in 1730 became a member of the Mennonite congregation. In Almelo he was a physician. On 21 June 1742 he received his medical doctor's degree from the University of Groningen. Besides his care for his patients he found time to give expression to his passion, the making of clocks. Six clocks made by van Heylbronn, all very beautiful and giving evidence of great skill, are still in existence. One is found in the Mennonite church of Almelo. His son Peter (1730-1776) was a clockmaker by trade.
