His parents were David Tobias Dirks (1 February 1820, Brenkenhofswalde, Brandenburg, Prussia - 13 June 1855, Gnadenfeld, Molotschna) and Elisabeth (Voth) Dirks (21 August 1821, Franztal bei Driessen, Brandenburg - 1887, Gnadenfeld, Molotschna), who had both immigrated as children from [[Brenkenhoffswalde and Franztal (Lubusz Voivodeship, Poland)|Brenkenhoffswalde]], Brandenburg. Heinrich married Aganetha "Agnes" Schroeder (7 December 1844, South Russia - 26 August 1911, Gnadenfeld, Molotschna), daughter of Heinrich Schroeder (1808-1863) and Anna (Reimer) Schroeder (1814-1869) in 1869. Heinrich and Aganetha had nine children (a tenth died in infancy while the family was in transit to the [[Indonesia|Dutch East Indies]]): Elisabeth, Heinrich, Evangeline, David, Maria, Margaretha, Anna, Hans, and Herman. Heinrich died on 8 February 1915 in Gnadenfeld, Molotschna.
