Pieter Cornelisz was preacher of the Reformed Church at [[Alkmaar (Noord Holland, Netherlands)|Alkmaar]] ([[Netherlands|Holland]]), opponent of [[Ries, Hans de (1553–1638)|Hans de Ries]], with whom he disputed for two days in 1592 on [[Infant Baptism|infant baptism]] in the house of Arent Claesz. On 10 August 1591 he had sent a compilation of 26 arguments proving that it is a Christian's duty to bear government office, to [[Jacob Jansz Scheedemaker (d. ca. 1596)|Jacob Jansz Scheedemaker]], the co-elder of Hans de Ries. Aided by de Ries, Scheedemaker presented a refutation on 21 September 1594, Nootwendige Verantwoordinge. When these booklets were published against the wish of Cornelisz, he published a reply in 1597, Grondige Wederlegginghe, etc., which closed the argument.
