Centen is a Mennonite family of [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]], whose members belonged to the High German congregation, and after the unification of this church with the Flemish group, to the United Frisian, Flemish, and High-German congregation (church [[Lammerenkrijgh|bij't Lam]]). [[Cents, Jan (17th century)|Jan Cents]] (also written Centen) signed the confession which is named for him. Job Sieuwertsz Centen I, b. 1639 at Amsterdam, who between 1679 and 1704 served his congregation four times as deacon, was painted in 1713 by Christoffel Lubienietski; he and his wife Maria van de Rijp founded an old people's home, called Rijpenhofje, which in 1747 was bequeathed to the church bij't Lam. Gosen Centen, painted by [[Flinck, Govert (1615-1660)|Govert Flinck]], is supposed to be his brother. Gozewijn Centen, painted with his family by Lubienietzki, who was a regent (governor) of the [[Rijpenhofje (Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Rijpenhofje]], was likely a son of Job Sieuwertsz Centen I. Job Sieuwertsz Centen II, b. about 1690 and baptized in the church bij't Lam on 8 February 1711, must be the grandson of J. S. Centen I. This J. S. Centen II was for many years secretary of the [[Commissie voor Buitenlandsche Nooden|Dutch Mennonite Committee of Foreign Needs]] (Commissie voor Buitenlandsche Nooden).

Many members of this family, which died out in the beginning of the 19th century, have served the congregation bij't Lam as deacons.
