Claude van Berenhout, a former soldier, was engaged in 1647 by the Reformed classis of [[Walcheren (Zeeland, Netherlands)|Walcheren]] to watch that the refugees fleeing from [[Belgium|Belgium]] did not become "infected with the errors of the [[Anabaptism|Anabaptists]]." Nevertheless many persons coming from [[Flanders (Belgium)|Flanders]] and other places joined the Mennonite congregation at [[Aardenburg (Zeeland, Netherlands)|Aardenburg]]. Although the conclusion of the Peace of Münster in 1648 sharply decreased the number of fugitives from Belgium, Berenhout was still at his post in 1649, when he was examined by the classis preparatory to going to the West Indies as a Reformed preacher. Whether or not his "watches" had any results we do not know.
