The Bekentenisse Obbe Philipsz (Confession of Obbe Philips) is the writing of the well-known Dutch Anabaptist elder [[Obbe Philips (ca. 1500-1568)|Obbe Philips]], in which he renounces his office. The full title reads as follows: Bekentenisse Obbe Philipsz, waer mede hij verclaert sijn Predick-ampt sonder wettelicke beroepinghe gebruyckt te hebben, beclaeght hem dies, en waerschuwet eenen yeders. In this booklet, supposedly written about 1560, in which he gives many particulars on the original [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] movement in the [[Netherlands|Netherlands]], the author declares that he has left the (Anabaptist) brotherhood ("he left his office and took leave of the brethren") because he could no longer believe that this church or any other visible church was the church of God. The booklet was printed in [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]], 1584, by Cornelis Claesz. The editor, an unknown Calvinist, wrote a lengthy but unimportant preface. A second edition (without year) and a third edition of 1609 appeared in Amsterdam, and in 1658 it was printed in [[Beginsel en voortganck der geschillen, scheuringen, en verdeeltheden onder de gene die Doopsgesinden Genoemt worden, Het (Booklet)|Beginsel en Voortganck]]. There has also been a French translation, Obbe Philippe Reconnaissance (Leiden, 1595), but this French edition is lost. [[Cramer, Samuel (1842-1913)|Samuel Cramer]] edited a new edition with an important introduction (Bibliotheca Reformatoria Neerlandica VII, 88-138). In Mennonite Quarterly Review, April 1947, 120-22, Leonard Verduin mentions an ancient version of Obbe Philips’ Confession.
