The American Mennonite Aid Committee was founded on 4 April 1884 in [[Newton (Kansas, USA)|Newton]], [[Kansas (USA)|Kansas]], to help Mennonites in [[Aulie-Ata Mennonite Settlement (Kazakhstan)|Aulie Ata]] and [[Khiva (Khorezm Oblast, Uzbekistan)|Khiva]]<em>, </em>[[Soviet Central Asia|Central Asia]], come to America. The officers elected were Bernhard Regier, president; [[Goerz, David (1849-1914)|David Goerz]], secretary; A. Sudermann, treasurer; members were [[Krehbiel, Christian (1832-1909)|Christian Krehbiel]], [[Gaeddert, Dietrich (1837-1900)|Dietrich Gaeddert]], [[Richert, Heinrich (1831-1895)|Heinrich Richert]] and Wm. Ewert. The minutes of this meeting and an appeal for contributions were printed in <em>[[Christlicher Bundesbote (Periodical)|Christlicher Bundesbote]] </em>(15 April 1884). It stated that some $10,000 were needed to help about 26 families come to America. The following issues of the paper carried reports about the need, help given and the coming of these families to America.
