Sudermann (Suderman) has been a common family name among the [[West Prussia|West Prussian]], Russian, and later North American Mennonites. The name appeared in Danzig as early as 1671 and was found in [[Elbing (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland)|Elbing]], [[Heubuden (Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland)|Heubuden]], and [[Königsberg (Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia)|Königsberg]]. The noted author [[Sudermann, Hermann (1857-1928)|Hermann Sudermann]] was of Mennonite background, his father having been baptized as Mennonite in Elbing. From this area the name was transplanted to [[Russia|Russia]]. Some notable representatives of this family within Russia were [[Sudermann, Leonard (1821-1900)|Leonhard Sudermann]], elder of the [[Berdyansk (Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Berdyansk Mennonite Church]], and later elder of the Emmaus Mennonite Church in North America; Franz Sudermann, a businessman from [[Halbstadt (Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Halbstadt]]; Jakob J. Sudermann, one of the most successful and prosperous Mennonite farmers in Russia, owner of the Apanlee estate, and cofounder and president of the [[Halbstadt Kommerzschule (Halbstadt, Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Halbstadt Kommerzschule]].

<em>Who's Who Among the Mennonites </em> (1943) lists members of the Sudermann family that were prominent in the Mennonite Church. John P. Suderman was a [[General Conference Mennonite Church (GCM)|General Conference Mennonite]] (GCM) missionary to the [[Hopi People|Hopi people]]; Herman E. Suderman was both founder and president of the Midland National Bank, [[Newton (Kansas, USA)|Newton]], [[Kansas (USA)|Kansas]]; John M. Suderman was a minister (GCM) and conference worker in Newton, Kansas; [[Suderman, David Harry (1909-1990)|David H. Suderman]] was a professor of music at [[Bethel College (North Newton, Kansas, USA)|Bethel College]]; and Jacob Sudermann of Elkhart, Indiana worked at both [[Goshen College (Goshen, Indiana, USA)|Goshen College]] and Indiana University, South Bend branch.
