Ernest E. Miller was born 16 September 1893 to Bishop Daniel D. and Jeanette Hostetler Miller at [[Middlebury (Indiana, USA)|Middlebury, IN]]. In 1918 he married Ruth Blosser, from Ada, Ohio. Two children, Thelma Miller Groff and Donald, were born to this union.

Miller was an educator throughout his active life. He earned a BA degree from [[Goshen College (Goshen, Indiana, USA)|Goshen College]], [[Goshen (Indiana, USA)|Goshen]], IN (1917) and MA (1929) and PhD (1939) degrees from New York University. After serving as principal and superintendent of schools in Shipshewana, IN (1914-1918), he and his wife became missionaries in [[India|India]] under the [[Mennonite Board of Missions (Mennonite Church)|Mennonite Board of Missions]] ([[Mennonite Church (MC)|Mennonite Church]]) (1921-1937). Here also he engaged largely in educational work, serving as principal of what became the Dhamtari Christian Academy.

In 1939 Miller became personnel director at Goshen College, and then served as president of the college, 1940-1954. His administration brought the college into the North Central Association, increased the student body, greatly enlarged the international student program, erected new buildings, and established the [[Goshen Biblical Seminary (Goshen, Indiana, USA)|Goshen College Biblical Seminary]] and the [[Goshen College School of Nursing (Goshen, Indiana, USA)|Collegiate School of Nursing]].

Miller died 11 January 1975 in [[Goshen (Indiana, USA)|Goshen]], IN. He was buried in the Prairie St. [[Cemeteries|cemetery]] in Elkhart, IN.
