View source for Hendrik Slachtscaep (ca. 1420-1534)

Hendrik Slachtscaep (Heinrich, Henric von Tongeren), one of the "[[Wassenberger Prädikanten|Wassenberg preachers]]," born ca. 1470 at Tongeren, bishopric of [[Liège (Liège, Belgium)|Li]][[Liège (Liège, Belgium)|é]][[Liège (Liège, Belgium)|ge]], a former [[Roman Catholic Church|Catholic]] priest, came more and more to [[Reformation, Protestant|Protestant]] convictions, which he preached in popular style with great force and success. Of especial interest are his tracts, <em>Der Trostbrief, </em>and the epistle <em>Aen myne liefte broeders en susters tot Sustern</em>. He was a determined opponent of [[Infant Baptism|infant baptism]]. In 1531 he preached in Wassenberg, [[Coesfeld (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)|Coesfeld]], [[Aachen (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)|Aachen]], and [[Maastricht (Limburg, Netherlands)|Maastricht]]. Against him and [[Campanus, Johannes (ca. 1500-1575)|Campanus]] was issued the edict of the government of [[Düsseldorf (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)|Düsseldorf]] of 1 November 1532. Invited by [[Rothmann, Bernhard (ca. 1495- ca. 1535)|Bernhard Rothmann]] by letter, he betook himself to [[Münster Anabaptists|Münster]] (1534) and was baptized there. Then he was sent out with the other "Wassenberg preachers" as apostles; he was executed as a [[Martyrs|martyr]] at [[Soest (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)|Soest]] on 23 October 1534.
