View source for Hans van der Straeten (1540?-1571)

Hans van der Straeten (Straten) was an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, arrested at [[Antwerp (Belgium)|Antwerp]], and burned at the stake at [[Brussels (Belgium)|Brussels]], [[Belgium|Belgium]], on 28 March 1571. He was 31 years of age and had been married only six weeks when he was imprisoned. His wife, [[Tanneken van Mechelen (16th century)|Tanneken van den Broucke]], born at Mechelen, 17 years of age, was arrested together with Hans. In prison when she was tried, she recanted and was put in a cloister at [[Breda (Noord-Brabant, Netherlands)|Breda]], in the [[Netherlands|Netherlands]], but soon managed to escape; then she traveled to [[Danzig (Poland)|Danzig]] in [[Prussia|Prussia]], where she joined the Flemish Mennonite Church. Hans belonged to a family that had many "heretics," some of whom joined the Mennonites and died as martyrs; a brother of Hans, [[Martin van der Straten (1534-1572)|Martin van der Straeten]], was executed at [[Ghent (Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium)|Ghent]] in 1572, and their father [[Joost van der Straten (d. 1571)|Josse]] (Joost) suffered martyrdom for his faith in [[Antwerp (Belgium)|Antwerp]] in 1571.
