Christian Gayman of Cayuga, [[Ontario (Canada)|Ontario]], was ordained as a minister about 1863, and as a bishop about 1875. He became one of the active leaders of the [[Old Order Mennonites|Old Order Mennonite]] schism in the [[Mennonite Conference of Ontario and Quebec|Ontario Mennonite Conference]] (MC) in 1889. At the 1888 conference he openly stated that he wished to form a conference of his own and did so in May 1889, at the [[Wideman Mennonite Church (Markham, Ontario, Canada)|Wideman Church]] in [[Markham (Ontario, Canada)|Markham]], Ontario. He was joined by [[Martin, Abraham W. (1834-1902)|Bishop Abraham Martin]] of [[Waterloo County (Ontario, Canada)|Waterloo County]] and [[Reesor, Christian (1833-1915)|Bishop Christian Reesor]] of Markham. Gayman's home congregation was the [[South Cayuga Mennonite Church (South Cayuga, Ontario, Canada)|Cayuga Church]] in [[Haldimand County (Ontario, Canada)|Haldimand County]] near the shore of Lake Erie.
