Johannes Petrus Matthijssen studied at the missionary high school in Oegstgeest (The [[Netherlands|Netherlands]]) and at [[Goshen Biblical Seminary (Goshen, Indiana, USA)|Goshen Biblical Seminary]] ([[United States of America|United States]]). He married Mary Berkman. From 1951 to 1958 they worked under the Dutch Mennonite mission board (later known as the [[Doopsgezinde Zendingsraad|Doopsgezinde Zendingsraad]]) in [[Java (Indonesia)|Java]] ([[Indonesia|Indonesia]]). Following their return in 1958 he served as executive secretary of the mission board, and from 1960 he was pastor of the Mennonite congregations in [[Meppel (Drenthe, Netherlands)|Meppel]] and [[Hoogeveen (Drenthe, Netherlands)|Hoogeveen]]. From 1964 until the time of his death he served as pastor of the Mennonite congregation in [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]]. He assumed primary responsibility for local arrangements for the [[Mennonite World Conference|Mennonite World Conference]] held in Amsterdam in 1967.
