View source for Mattheus Keuse (d. 1573)

Mattheus Keuse (Kuese), an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, was born at Roesselare, Flanders, and at the time of his death was a tailor, 31 years of age. In 1567 he left the town of [[Ghent (Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium)|Ghent]] in Belgium because of fear of persecution, since his child had not been baptized. After a stay in the [[Netherlands|Netherlands]], leaving his family behind at [[Dordrecht (Zuid-Holland, Netherlands)|Dordrecht]], he returned to Flanders, but on his way to Ghent he was apprehended at [[Bruges (West-Vlaanderen, Belgium)|Bruges]]. Here, remaining loyal to his Lord, he was burned at the stake on 7 August 1573 (not 1574 as is stated in[[Martyrs' Mirror|<em> Martyrs Mirror</em>]]).
