View source for Tobias Quintincxsz (d. 1549)

Tobias Quintincxsz (Questincx), an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, burned at the stake on 20 March 1549, at [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]], Netherlands, with seven others. Tobias, a cobbler, was a citizen of Amsterdam (not a native of Linninkhausen as is reported in <em>Mennonitisches Lexikon</em>). He was charged with the crimes of rebaptism (baptized by [[Gillis van Aken (ca. 1500-1557)|Gillis van Aken]]) and persisting in his heresy. On 14 February he was severely tortured. Tobias and his fellow martyrs died valiantly. [[Braght, Tieleman Jansz van (1625-1664)|Van Braght]] published the sentence from the original records in the <em>[[Martyrs' Mirror|Martyrs' Mirror]]</em>; the name of Questincx given here is garbled. Tobias's property was confiscated. He and his co-martyrs are commemorated in the hymn "Tis nu schier al Vervult ons broeders getal," found in [[Veelderhande Liedekens|<em>Veelderhande Liedekens</em>]] of 1556 and the following editions.
