Zionspilger, Der (Periodical)
Der Zionspilger (The Pilgrim to Zion), a Swiss Mennonite periodical published by the Emmental Mennonite congregation at Langnau, canton of Bern, Switzerland, since January 1882, as a 4-page 10 x 14 inch monthly to June 1884, bimonthly July 1884-97, weekly since 1897.
The editor was customarily the leading elder or pastor of the Emmenthal congregation: Samuel Bähler 1882-d.90, Johann Kipfer 1890-1897, 1901-1943, Mathias Pohl 1898-1900, Johannes Rüfenacht 1943- In 1918-1940 the journal had a second editor besides Kipfer to represent the Freie Gemeinde, and in 1918-1921 the name was changed to Freie Zeuge vormals Zionspilger. The Zionspilger has been a devotional-type journal with news of the Swiss congregations and beginning the mid-20th century brief items of Swiss and world news. Earlier some correspondence from Germany and America was printed, and in the time of Bähler and Pohl some Anabaptist and Mennonite historical material. A considerable portion of the readership has been non-Mennonite.
