Y. P. Messenger, Vol. 3, no. 4 (Dec. 1949)

Y. P. Messenger, (last issue titled “Young People’s Messenger”), was a bilingual quarterly magazine 22.5 x 30.0 cm in size, with issues ranging from 20 to 32 pages. It began with vol. 1, no.1 (October 1947) and continued to vol. 4, no. 2 (June 1950). It was published by the youth organization of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada. The first two volumes were published in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and last two in Altona, Manitoba. Pastor Isaac Epp of the Grace Mennonite Church in Prince Albert, was the sole editor-in-chief. Annual subscriptions were one dollar. Two thousand copies of the first issue were printed.

Y. P. Messenger was popular and widely circulated in Canada with 800-900 paid annual subscriptions. It was highly illustrated and had contributors from British Columbia to Ontario. Issues usually contained an editorial, letters to the editor, Jugendkanzel (Youth Pulpit), sometimes a poem or short humor piece, provincial youth reports, contributions from foreign mission workers and from Bible schools, reports of youth in service work and comments from pastors and interested readers of all ages. German and English each occupied about half of the content. Because much of the materials was candid, and the format was contemporary for the times, the editor received much criticism. The conference youth wanted their own periodical but there was never consensus on its format, language, frequency of publication, content, or financing. After three and half years of effort Isaac Epp resigned and the Y. P. Messenger ended publication.
