Waynesboro, a city (1958 pop. 12,357; 2006 pop. 21,454) in Augusta County, Virginia, was the trading center for an Amish and Mennonite population of 788 members in the late 1950s. At that time there were six congregations of the Southern District of the Virginia Mennonite Conference (MC) with a total of 602 members in the neighborhood: Springdale 5 miles south, Hildebrands 5 miles north, Mt. View 15 miles south, Stuarts Draft 15 miles southwest, Greenmonte 20 miles southwest, and Lynside 6 miles south. The Mt. Zion Beachy Amish church with 81 members in the late 1950s was located 12 miles west, and an Old Order Amish group with 105 members 10 miles west near Stuarts Draft.
