Waterland is a municipality in the Dutch province of North Holland, approximately bounded by the Zaan River on the south and the west, by the Zuiderzee (now IJssel Lake) on the east, and on the north by the former lakes south of the line Alkmaar-Hoorn. In this territory as early as 1534 there were numerous Anabaptists, and after ca. l555 because of their progressiveness, "Waterlander" became the name of a branch of the Dutch Mennonites (see Waterlanders.)
