Vollenhoven, a Dutch Mennonite family, whose progenitor was (1) Jan Hendricksz (de) Hertoghe (Amsterdam, 1657-1727), who took the family name of Vollenhove(n). Both he and his wife Lysbeth Rombouts as well as his descendants were members of the Amsterdam Mennonite Lamist congregation. His grandson (2) Cornelis Vollenhoven (1723-89) was a merchant at Amsterdam. A son of (2) Cornelis was (3) Hendrik Vollenhoven (1753- 1826), married to Catharina Johanna van Bee(c)k, who obtained his D. Jur. degree at Leiden in 1774 and after the Napoleonic Wars was a high official in the Dutch state. He served as a deacon in the Amsterdam congregation and was also a trustee of the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary. A son of his was (4) Jacob van Beeck Vollenhoven (1780-1834), a businessman at Amsterdam, partner in the trading company of Ten Cate and Vollenhoven, consul of Prussia, cofounder and trustee of the Algemeene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (ADS) and curator of its seminary, both 1811-d.1834. (5) Hendrik van Beeck Vollenhoven (1811-71), a son of (4) Jacob, was a physician at Amsterdam until 1840; he then gave up his practice because of poor health, to become a member of the van Heukelom and Vollenhoven firm of grain merchants. He was a member of the Dutch First Chamber 1849-71 and its president 1870-71. He served the Mennonite church as a trustee of the ADS (moderator 1856-1857) and seminary curator. Like his father and other members of the family he was a deacon of the Amsterdam congregation. His grandson Hendrik van Beeck Vollenhoven (1877-1943) was a physician at Haarlem and a deacon of the Haarlem Mennonite congregation 1924-d.1943.
