Van der Vlugt, a Mennonite family of bankers at Haarlem, Holland, six of whom served as deacons of the Haarlem Mennonite congregation since 1762, and some of whom were trustees of the Algemeene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (ADS). An outstanding member of this family was Willem van der Vlugt (b. 1853 at Haarlem, d. 19— at Leiden), who studied law and from 1880 was professor of law at Leiden University; he also was a member of the Dutch Second Chamber. From 1885 he was a deacon at Leiden, and 1887-1921 a trustee of the ADS, its moderator 1895-1896, and curator of the Mennonite seminary 1890-1921. Jan van der Vlugt of Haarlem was treasurer of the Committee for Foreign Needs from 1921, acting in behalf of the Russian refugees. Abraham Jan Theodoor van der Vlugt (1894-1954) was active in the relief of the Mennonite refugees from Russia in 1923. In 1929-1938 he was a trustee (also treasurer and moderator) of the Hague congregation; in 1945 he was appointed Minister of State and ambassador of the Netherlands to Finland, where he suddenly died at Helsinki on 8 January 1954.
