Visser family name
Visser, a Dutch family name, Mennonite as well as non-Mennonite; the name is still very common, and means "fisherman." Many of the numerous Mennonite Visser families are not interrelated. The following persons by this name have served as Mennonite ministers: Jan Visser, d. ca. 1762, serving at Schiedam 1728-1731 and at Haarlem (Peuzelaarsteeg congregation) 1731-1757. He published Redenvoering (Sermon) over Matt. 24 vers 6-8 op den Beededag des faars 1741 (Haarlem, 1742).
Pieter Jans Visser, d. 30 October 1789, was a lay preacher of Twisk 1743-1746 and Hoorn 1746-d. 1789. His son (?) Jan Visser, d. 29 November 1831, also a lay preacher, served at Medemblik 1780-1783 and Koog-Zaandijk 1783-d. 1831. A Leerrede (Sermon) of his was published at Purmerend in 1808. Dirk Gerbens Visser, d. July 1836, was a lay preacher at Gorredijk-Lippenhuizen 1806-29 and at Irnsum 1829-d. 1836. Haitje Hantjes Visser was a lay preacher and later elder of the congregation of Balk 1828-1854.
Cornelis Visser, d. 1944, of Haarlem, a deacon from 1900 until his death, was for many years the secretary of the Dienstjarenfonds.
