Verloove (Verlove), a Dutch family of Mennonite refugees, moving from [[Flanders (Belgium)|Flanders]], Belgium, to Rotterdam and Haarlem, Holland, in the early 17th century or even earlier. An outstanding member of this family was Karel (Carel) Verloove, b. 1633 at Haarlem, d. ca. 1700 at [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]], who was a poet, whose verse was highly esteemed during his life time. One of his publications was <em>Uytbreyding over de heylige Lofzangen</em> (Amsterdam, 1686), a song- book containing some 200 hymns with psalm tunes. He belonged to a group of liberal poets, usually called the circle of [[Zoet, Jan (1610-1674)|Jan Zoet]], all of whom favored [[Collegiants|Collegiant]] views. Karel Verloove was a friend of Jan Luyken, who dedicated one of his poems to Verloove, and was well acquainted with [[Antonides, Joannes (1647-1684)|Johannes Antonides van der Goes]] and [[Plockhoy, Pieter Cornelisz (1620?-1700?)|Pieter Cornelisz Plockhoy]]. His brother Pieter Verloove also wrote verse.
