Verhamme family
Verhamme, a Dutch Mennonite family, whose ancestor Pieter Verhamme moved from Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders, Belgium, to Haarlem, Holland, in 1567 because of persecution. Here this family was found first in the Flemish, then in the Peuzelaarsteeg Mennonite congregation until it died out in die 18th century. From about 1700 a branch was also found in Amsterdam as members of the Lamist church. Here too they died out. Elisabeth Verhamme, one of the last descendants, died unmarried in 1858 and left a legacy to the Algemeene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit.
The Verhammes were prominent businessmen at Haarlem and Amsterdam. Abraham Verhamme (1639-1727) is said to have been one of the wealthiest citizens of Haarlem. They were faithful members of the church. As far as known, no members of this family served as ministers, but some of them were trustees of the Mennonite orphanage at Haarlem, and a number of them both at Haarlem and Amsterdam served as deacons.
