The Verhammes were prominent businessmen at Haarlem and Amsterdam. Abraham Verhamme (1639-1727) is said to have been one of the wealthi­est citizens of Haarlem. They were faithful mem­bers of the church. As far as known, no members of this family served as ministers, but some of them were trustees of the Mennonite orphanage at Haarlem, and a number of them both at Haarlem and Amsterdam served as deacons.
