Gerrit Jansz Veerom was the son of Jan Gerritse Veerom of Rotterdam, Netherlands, who was a preacher of the Flemish Mennonite congregation in Rotterdam from 1641 until his death in 1652. Gerrit was a preacher of the same Flemish Mennonite church in Rotterdam from 1653 to 1655, but in 1655, having more liberal convictions than his congregation, he joined the Rotterdam Waterlander congregation. Shortly after he moved to Amsterdam and became a preacher of the Waterlander (Toren) congregation there, and after the merger with the Lamist church he served the united congregation until 1671, in which year he was censured for frequenting taverns.
