Sergei and Vera Atchkassov arrived from Moscow just before Christmas 1998 to begin planting the Vancouver Russian Church in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2000 they had an attendance of 20-25 at their Sunday worship services, but the potential was large: at that time there were 40,000 immigrants from Russia in the Vancouver area. The congregation joined the British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches in May 2000 and met in the facilities of the Vancouver Mennonite Brethren Church. Due to a lack of response among the Vancouver Russian community, the church closed at the end of November 2001 and the Atchkassovs returned to Moscow.
