Unschuld und Gegen-Bericht der Evangelischen Tauff-gesinneten Christen, so Mennonisten genandt werden, über die unverschuldete Beschuldigung, als ob sie von der aufrührischen Münsterschen Rotte entsprossen, und derselben Grund und Lehre führeten, Nebenst Des Menno Simonis Ausgang aus dem Pabstthum, Lebens-Lauff, wie auch Glaubens-Bekäntniss von der heiligen Dreyeinigkeit, Sampt Der also genandten Mennonisten Glaubens-Bekäntniss und Lehre, Wie auch eine Predigt, gehalten in derselben Gemeine, Ausgegeben durch Gerh. Roosen. Hamburg in Verlegung desselben. Ratzeburg, Gedruckt bei Sigismund Hoffmann, 1702. This important booklet by the pastor of the Hamburg-Altona (Germany) Mennonite Church, Gerrit Roosen (1612-1711), published by the author in 1702, was reprinted in a second edition in 1753. The Unschuld und Gegen-Bericht section, the first part actually written by the author, covers the first 29 pages, the remaining pages 29-76 constituting translations of three short tracts or sections from Menno Simons' writings. Pages 77-104 contain a brief biography of Menno by Roosen. Two remaining sections of the book, each with separate title page and pagination, contain a confession of faith (40 pp.) written by Roosen, and a sermon (46 pp.) by Roosen. All sections are covered by the general title page and were printed together. The purpose of the book as a whole was to defend the Mennonites from false accusations of Münsterism and heresy, and to prove that the Mennonites are good, pious, and evangelical. The first section, a sketch of the origin of Anabaptism, corrects the history by Sleidanus (Beschreibung geistlicher und weltlicher Sachen, 1547 and many later editions), which asserted that Anabaptism was of Münsterite origin.
