He was a painter and engraver by profession, as well as a successful poet. One of his 435 hymns, "Elend nit schad, wer tugend hat," is found in Wackernagel, <em>Kirchenlied</em> V, No. 827. Many of his hymns are found in Protestant hymnals. [[Sepp, Christiaan (1820-1890)|Christian Sepp]] published a thorough study of Sudermann in his <em>Kerkhistorische Studien</em> (1885): 238-77.
