Stockman(n), a Mennonite family formerly in the congregation of Hamburg-Altona Germany. Its ancestor was Samuel (1) Stockman, who presumably was born at Antwerp, Belgium, and moved from there to Hamburg in the late 16th century. He was married to Louisjen Noë; he was at first a tailor, and later became a prosperous businessman. His son Samuel (2) Stockman, died Hamburg 1678, a merchant like his father, was for a number of years a deacon of the Hamburg Mennonite Church. A descendant of Samuel (1) was Jan Stockmann, who was chosen preacher of this church in 1711, but served for only two years, dying of the plague in 1713. In the 17th century some members of this family left the Mennonite Church to join the Dompelaar congregation at Hamburg, including Isaac Stockmann and his sons Samuel and Jan. Samuel Stockman was a preacher of this Dompelaar church in the 1660's.
