Stijntgen Vercoilgen, an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on 22 April 1569, at Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders, Belgium. Van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror erroneously gives 9 March 1569, as the execution date. The official name of this martyr was Josyne Andries (dochter), wife of Rougier van Quoilge. Although she had wanted to join the Mennonite congregation of Kortrijk since 1567, she was not baptized until the end of 1568. She was tortured on 1 March 1569, but remained steadfast, and refused to name her fellow members. Though information is scarce, we may conclude that this martyr was well-to-do, since her property was confiscated. During the execution special measures were taken to guard the site, apparently because the magistrates feared intervention from sympathizing spectators.
