The Sommerfeld Mennonite Gemeinde in Manitoba began services and formally organized in 1892. The first building was occupied in 1905. Isaac Friesen is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through division from the Bergthaler Mennonite group.

Aeltester John A. Friesen served in 1985 as a non-salaried congregational leader. In 1985 there were 3981 members. The congregation has been affiliated with the Sommerfelder Mennonite Church. The language of worship is German and English; the transition from German occurred in 1970s.
