Christian Snyder: deacon in Mennonite churches in Roseland, Nebraska, Filer, Idaho, Duchess, Alberta, Creston, Montana, and Canby, Oregon, was born near Freeport, Illinois on 4 April 1870 and died at Canby, Oregon, 10 March 1948. He married Jessie May Easter on 24 December 1890. They were parents of three daughters. Jessie died 12 February 1893. Christian married Nancy Elizabeth Shupe on 9 January 1896. They were parents of two daughters and six sons. Christian's second wife died in 1930. After her death he lived at different times with his daughters.
Christian Snyder was baptized and received into the Roseland, Nebraska Mennonite church on 25 August 1892. Ten years later, on 25 September 1902, he was ordained to the office of deacon in the Roseland church. He served there until 1913 when the family moved to Filer, Idaho. In 1917 the family moved again, living and serving briefly in Duchess before another move in the fall of 1917, this time to Creston, Montana. The Snyders left Montana in 1921 or 1922. Chris, having been ordained a deacon for life, served in that capacity in the various churches of which he became a member as a result of his frequent moves.
Conference and Mission Board activities, first with the Kansas-Nebraska Conference and then with the Pacific Coast Conference, took up a good deal of Christian Snyder's time. He served as President of the Mission Board of the Pacific Coast Conference for twenty-three years and expressed great satisfaction that, throughout that time, he had a perfect record of attendance. He was also interested in singing, promoting singing classes and song programs in the church. He lived sacrificially, regarding the Scriptures as a complete guide to Christian life.
