Sijntgen, an Anabaptist martyr, the aged mother of the martyr Steven de Graet, was burned at the stake with her son on 7 April 1564, at Ghent in Flanders, Belgium. The information given in the Offer des Heeren and in van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror is rather incomplete, stating neither the exact date nor the manner of execution. Verheyden was able to give some details from the official records: Sijntgen's full name was Jozyne Steghers; she was born at Kortrijk in Flanders, and was the widow of Cornelis Segaert (the name of de Graet is apparently a corruption of Segaert). Both Sijntgen and her son are commemorated in the hymn "Als men schreef duyst vijfhondert jaer ende twee en tsestich mede," found in the Lietboecxken.
