Servaes, Vuegen (d. 1535)

Vuegen (Voegen) Servaes, a Sacramentist of Maastricht, Dutch province of Limburg, who about the fall of 1534 became a member of the Maastricht Anabaptist congregation, having been baptized by Jan Smeitgen. Arrested with many other members, he renounced his faith and was beheaded at Maastricht on 6 February 1535. His confession before the officials is very remarkable; he says that he was baptized by Jan Smeitgen during a meeting of the congregation in a private home; before baptism was administered Smeitgen had preached on Mark 16:16, teaching that faith should precede the ceremony of baptism. He also confessed that they were interested in the events at Münster and that those of Münster "had chosen a king."
