Christianus Schotanus (1603-1671) was a Reformed pastor and from 1639 a professor at the University of Franeker, Friesland, Netherlands, where he at first taught Greek and history and later also theology. His most outstanding book was De Geschiedenissen kerkelyck ende wereltlyck van Friesland oost ende west . . . tot op het jaer 1583 (Franeker, 1658), which, though antiquated in its first part, is still of importance for the history of the 16th century. Schotanus was a bitter antagonist of the Mennonites and attacked them in Van de Gronden der Mennisterij, ofte Waerschouwinghe over 't Bloed-tooneel der Doopsgesinde van Thieleman Jans van Bracht (Leeuwarden, 1671). This book, written by order of the Reformed Synod in Friesland, severely criticizes van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror, first edition of 1660. Schotanus' main theses are: the Waldenses have not preserved the Apostolic traditions; the Mennonites have their origin in the Münster revolt; the government should be on guard as to the Mennonites; because of ungodly revolutionary principles in the past, they should not be granted toleration. This book by Schotanus is very biased and has no historic value.
