Schlegel is a Mennonite family name of Swiss origin that, as of 1959, was found chiefly in [[Illinois (USA)|Illinois]], [[Oregon (USA)|Oregon]] and [[Ontario (Canada)|Ontario]]. Nicholas Schlegel was one of the early members of the [[East Zorra Mennonite Church (Tavistock, Ontario, Canada)|East Zorra Amish Mennonite Church]] in [[Ontario (Canada)|Ontario]]. Christian Schlegel settled in the Amish community of central Illinois in 1835. It is possible that he is the Christian Schlegel (1819-84) who served as an Amish Mennonite bishop in [[Livingston County (Illinois, USA)|Livingston County]]. His son Joseph Schlegel (1847-1914) was ordained an Amish Mennonite bishop in 1891, serving the Pleasant View congregation at Hydro, OK. Joseph's son, John Slagell, was a minister in this congregation as well.
