San José de Pequina Colony (Bolivia)
San José de Pequina Colony of Bolivia is located about 340 km (212 miles) east of Santa Cruz. This is 40 km (25 miles) north of the town of San José de Chiquitos. This colony was started in 1974 when about 70 Old Colony Mennonite families from the Shipyard and Blue Creek Mennonite colonies in Belize, and about 20 families from Santa Rita colony, Mexico, moved to Bolivia. Bishop Jacob Harms was the colony's spiritual leader in 1986 when the colony had a total population of 1,668 with 543 baptized church members. The distance from the city and transportation problems have made marketing difficult, and the colony has not prospered very much.
