Rosario (Chihuahua, Mexico)

Rosario, Mexico, a former settlement of refugee Mennonites from Russia after World War I, located some miles west of the large Old Colony Mennonite settlement in the state of Chihuahua about 240 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The settlement was made in 1924 on a ranch which, with help of the Mennonite Board of Colonization in the United States, was rented with an option to buy. The original group consisted of 36 families but a number of families joined later. The Rosario settlement effort resulted in failure. Some of the families moved to Irapuato and others who were able to get Mexican citizenship after two years of residence in Mexico immigrated to Canada. Within two years the last of the Mennonite families had left Rosario.
