Ransom Mennonite settlement (Ness County, Kansas, USA)

Ransom Mennonite (Mennonite Church) settlement, now extinct, in Ness County, Kansas, was founded by Shellenberger, Ummel, Schrock, Miller, Troyer, and Stutzman families; the date of the founding is not known. E. M. Shellenberger, a Mennonite minister from Freeport, Illinois, lived in the community for a few years, but the congregation was never organized. Services at first were held in a store building and later in a schoolhouse in Ransom. In 1918 fourteen members of the Ransom community were received into the West Liberty Mennonite Church. Monthly preaching appointments were held at Ransom until 1925. Preacher S. C. Miller moved to Ness County in 1886, and a year later was ordained bishop, but in the following year moved back to McPherson County.
