Raid, Balthasar (1495-1565)

Balthasar Raid (Raide, Raidt, Reide, Rhaide) of Fulda, pastor of Hersfeld, Germany, 1525-1565, "the first really Protestant preacher of the city church" (Freudenstein, 35). He was frequently called to debate with the Anabaptists of Hesse; by 1544 he claimed to have dealt with three hundred of them, among whom he had many a success. In 1533 he wrote against Georg Witzel: Widder das lester vnd lügen büchlin Agricole Phagj, genant Georg Witzel antwort (Wittenberg). In 1539 followed: Concordia vnnd vergleichung der Papisten, Widderteuffer, Rotten, Witzelianer vn Latheraner jnn vnnd mit der heiligen catholischen Christlichen kirchen, an die zween Ept zu Fulda vnd Herssfelt (Erfurt), both with a foreword by Luther. Both are in the Library of the University of Göttingen.
