The Plum Coulee Bergthaler Mennonite congregation began after Mennonites first moved into the Plum Coulee area in the 1890s. In 1897 the Bergthaler Lehrdienst assigned two men to visit the families in the area. By 1904 some worship services were held in the local school building. From then until 1925 they met in various rented facilities. In 1925 the congregation purchased the Baptist meeting house in Plum Coulee. In the 1940s this building was expanded, with a subsequent building program in 1958. J. J. Hooge is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through division from the Sommerfelder Mennonites.
In 1965 there were 222 members; in 1975, 257; in 1985, 266; in 1995, 208; in 2000, 208. The congregation has been affiliated with Mennonite Church Manitoba and the Conference of Mennonites in Canada / Mennonite Church Canada (1903-). The language of worship is English; the transition from German occurred in the 1960s.
The leaders of the congregation have included Abram Bückert (1930-1950), Johann Hooge (1911-1957), Jakob N. Hoeppner (1932-1935), Peter Dirks (1933-1934), Franz Sawatzky (1936-1950), Johann Heinrichs (1938-1944), Peter Rempel (1940, 1942), Bernhard Wiebe (1948-1967), D. Hildebrandt (1953-1957), Lawrence Siemens (1968-1971), David Adrian (1972-1980), Harry Siemens (1981), Ed Funk (1982-1988), Werner Janzen (1989-1993), Glen Siemens (1994- ).
The church's address is Box 14, Plum Coulee, MB, R0G 1R0. (204) 829-3609. The building is located at 51 Main Street. Pastors Glen Siemens and Robert Penner served in 2000 as congregational leaders.
