Jacob Pietersz (also called Jacob Pietersz van de Kooch, Cooch, Coogh) of Koog aan de Zaan, Dutch province of North Holland, was a preacher of the Flemish Mennonite congregation of Koog and Zaandam-West. He served here from before 1645 until his death. Jacob Pietersz was a peaceable man, as is shown from a letter dated 30 January 1661, in which he urged moderation and peace. On 9 June 1664, he tried to intervene in the quarrels which had arisen in the Flemish congregation at Amsterdam (see Lammerenkrijgh), but in vain. He then published Vrede-basuyn tot verminderingh van de verschillen, voorgevallen onder de Doopsgesinde tot Amsterdam (Amsterdam, 1664), in which he criticized the quarrels and showed his sympathy with Galenus Abrahamsz and the Lamists. This book was opposed by P(ieter) A(postool)  in his Antwoort op de soo genaemde Vredebasuyn (Amsterdam, 1665). Jacob Pietersz had previously published Veilighe Wech (Amsterdam, 1631), in which he warned against the practice of strict banning. He also published Korte Onderwysinge voor de jonge Aenkomelingen . . . , a catechism (first edition lost; 2nd edition Wormerveer, 1650; 3rd edition, called 2nd on title page, Amsterdam, 1674); Inleydinge om te koomen tot een recht gebruyck van de tijdelicke Goederen (Wormerveer, 1649) and Handelingh of Onderrichtinge om te koomen tot de ware Ruste des Gemoeds . . . (Amsterdam, 1652), a devotional booklet followed by an appendix which discusses the way in which Mennonite ministers are to be appointed and their authority. He is probably identical with the Jacob Pietersz who was a member of the Frisian Mennonite congregation at Zaandam, but who joined the Flemish congregation with some followers about 1632.
