Pieter de Backer(e), an Anabaptist martyr, who is listed in van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror as having been arrested at Gent, Belgium, with four other Anabaptists, and executed at the market place of Antwerp in 1557. The official records, collected and published by P. Génard in Antwerpsch Archieven-Blad, give the information that Pieter Pluvier, commonly called Pieter de Backere (baker) of Wervik in Flanders was burned at the stake at Antwerp on 30 January 1557. His name is also found in the hymn "Aenhoort Godt, hemelsche Vader" (Hear, O God, heavenly Father), No. 16 of the Lietboecxken.
