Daniel B. Peter was born 15 August 1894 into a Hindu family. His father's name was Deonath. He was one of 16 orphans from Raipur that W. B. Page received into the American Mennonite mission orphanage in 1900 during the great famine. Daniel was sent to Allahabad for his high school training and was the first student from the American Mennonite Mission to complete high school. He later earned an IA (intermediate arts) degree from the Benares Hindu U., Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and served as a teacher in the Mission Middle School in Dhamtari until his retirement in 1957. He was ordained deacon for the Sunderganj Mennonite congregation in Dhamtari in 1916 and served in this capacity until his death on 22 April 1973. He married Grace Das, a Christian woman from Dhamtari, and had three children.
