Paulus (Pouwel) van Meenen (Paulus van Tielt), a Mennonite elder who was active in Flanders, Belgium, from about 1565. About his private life little is known. He was born at Meenen (Menin) of a prominent family; in 1605 he was still living, then being an elder at Haarlem, Holland. His name is mentioned by some martyrs who had been baptized by him. He was apparently very active in preaching and baptizing. Hans Alenson (BRN VII: 215) reported that after the Frisian-Flemish schism of 1566 Paulus van Meenen sided with the Flemish branch, but took a strict position concerning banning. A letter written in prison by Jacob de Rore to Paulus van Meenen (found in van Braght's Martyr’s Mirror) reveals that Paulus had asked the opinion of his co-elder de Rore as to banning and shunning. De Rore answered by admonishing Paulus van Meenen not to force the issue of the practice of avoidance.
