Andreas Pürcher (Andries Pirchner), an Anabaptist martyr, a tile-maker, born in Stertzing, Tyrol, Austria (now Italy), resident in Scharlach in the Engadin, was captured on 26 May (June 5), 1584, at Latsch on the Adige, a village in the Vintschgau not far from Schlanders; he was taken to Goldrain and brutally tortured. He was commanded to report where and with whom he had lodged. This he refused to do, since he would not be a Judas to those who had been kind to him. As concerned his faith, he would remain by the vows he had taken at his baptism, and not become a liar to God, even if he should have to suffer death in consequence. Neither the arguments of the priests nor the request of sympathizers influenced him. Thus he willingly suffered martyrdom on 19 October 1584, at Schantzen near Schlanders. He is the author of the song of 36 stanzas which begins, "Singen wollen wir unserem Gott, der die Frommen in ihrer Not."
